The annual incidence of bacterial meningitis is 4 to 6 cases per 100,000 adults in developed countries. The disease is associated with substantial mortality, and often, with serious sequelae in patients who survive. This article differentiates aseptic and bacterial meningitis, reviews their vast etiologies, and summarizes current diagnostic and treatment practices.
