An eight-year-old boy complains that his heel has been in pain
for two weeks. What is your interpretation of the lateral film of
his foot?

ANSWER
The radiograph is normal. The density of the calcaneal apophysis
and its division into several segments (arrows) all reflect normal
growth patterns. These changes should not be misinterpreted as evidence
of aseptic necrosis or osteochondritis.
